Mexican Music


Mexican music is an integral part of Mexican culture and boasts of diverse musical genres. Traditional music of Mexico have earned a world wide popularity. Contemporary as well as classical genres of Mexican music are a rage among music lovers. Among the popular regional Mexican music genres, one of the best known is the norteno style. This style has emerged out of a synthesis of different musical styles like polka, country music, cumbis, waltz and tejano. The defining feature of this style of music is the lyrics that narrate the story of ordinary people. Tejano and norteno genres of music are together termed as Grupera.

Ranchera is another well known Mexican music type, that is popular because of its romantic appeal. The mariachis render interpretation to Ranchera music. Banda music reached the pinnacle of popularity during the period of Mexican Revolution. This kind of music bears the influence of Native America. Yet another variety of regional Mexican music is Duranguense, which took shape in Durango, a Mexican state in the northern part of the country. In the latter half of the twentieth century, Cumbis music rose to popularity. Modern genres of music that are gaining prominence include hip hop, pop, Mexican electronic music and rock music. Latin Alternative also feature among the popular genres of Mexican music.

Classical music of Mexico bears the mark of Spanish music. Being a colony of Spain, a particular dialect of Mexican Spanish developed in the country. The diverse music genres that have developed in the country also feature music lyric in Mexican Spanish.
