The development of Mexico internet has occurred in four discrete phases. Each phase is characterized by its own defining features. The first phase has been termed the introductory phase. In this phase, internet connections were set up for the very first time in Mexico. The introductory phase commenced in 1989 and existed till 1993. Academic prerequisites led to the establishment of first internet connections in Mexico. Gradually, internet connections were provided in all the major universities across the country. The second phase has been termed the development phase. This phase began in 1994 and continued through 1995. Academic as well as government efforts, initiated this phase.
The third phase in the development of Mexico internet is called the duopoly phase. The necessity of using the internet for commercial purposes led to the initiation of this phase. This phase saw the establishment of National Technology Network. This phase emerged in the year 1996 and continued till 1998. The final phase of Mexico internet development has been termed the competitive phase. To further enhance efficiencies of the market, this phase unleashed in the year 1999. This phase was propelled by industry, marked based demand and deregulations of the government. The Mexican government has taken new initiatives to make internet accessible in all parts of the country and to all citizens. Towards this goal, the government of Mexico has designed the e-Mexico project.
