Mexican Folk Art


Mexican folk art exhibits a wide array of diversifications. While some forms of folk art in Mexico bear the mark of Spanish traditions, other forms are characterized by the distinctive features of native Indian traditional art. Folk art of Mexico can be found in each and every village of the country. The techniques for creating the folk art forms have been passed down from one generation to the other, through ages. Nevertheless, new methods and techniques have also evolved in the course of time. Mexican folk art is of immense importance to the nation, as it not only breathes the rich cultural heritage of the country but functions as an important source of livelihood for several native Indians.

The primary types of Mexican folk art forms include pottery, lacquer-ware, textile and clothing, baskets, masks, miniatures, toys, glass, woodcarvings, copper and tin and stone objects. Pottery of Mexico was originally hand made. The diversity of pottery types in Mexico is overwhelming. Among the Mexican folk art forms, pottery is quite an ancient one. There are three places in Mexico that specialize in lacquer-ware artifacts: Chiaspas, Michoacan and Guerrero.



Mexican style of clothing is well known throughout the world. The art of weaving has been practiced by the Mexicans through ages. Wool and silk was introduced by the Spanish. Equally ancient in Mexico is the art of basket weaving. Masks in Mexico can mainly be found in central, northwestern and southern states that have always played a significant role in Mexican culture. Dolls, rattles, animal figures and whistles are common types of Mexican toys that are made of different types of materials. Miniatures have also been a part of Mexican folk art through generations. Copper and tin objects have featured among Mexican folk art forms since the Spanish rule.

Alebrijes

Alebrijes art forms created by Oaxaqueno artisans are known for their magical and artificial forms. These are hand carved objects representing peculiar figures. Alebrijes have taken the ancient art of wood carving to its zenith.
