Mexico architecture is known for its rich variety, that has developed through several phases. The architectural styles that emerged during the period of Maya Civilization, has played an important role in enriching the architecture of Mexico. These styles that define Maya architecture, have emerged out of a synthesis of features like arches, moldings, columns and terraces that were superimposed. Maya architectural forms came into existence during the classical phase. The variety of architecture in Mexico can also be discovered in the distinctive styles of architecture that characterize different regions. For instance, Mexican architecture that has evolved in the coastal regions of the south have their own typical features.
Mexica, Chenes, Palenque, Puuc, Rio Bec and Peten are the typical architectural patterns that characterize Maya architecture. Mexica style includes form like altars that are adorned with skulls and walls with slopes. Roof peaks positioned on the front part, columns panels and mosaic stone decorations characterize Chenes style. Palenque style on the other hand boasts of features like facades adorned with stucco postures, temples that possess two rooms and the central wall containing the roof crests. The Peten style have features like sections with slopes, buildings that are positioned on terraces with steps and wide walls.
Mexico architecture in the southern coastal parts of the country are known for their gentler features. In this type of architecture the conventional meaning of the exterior and interior zones changes. The walls do not stand their fixed positions. Their only function is to provide the necessary privacy needed. This simple style of Mexico architecture embodied in thatch and wood structures have existed for several years along the coast. Yet another architectural feature that define Mexico architecture is the Haciendas. The estates of the Mexico or the large houses of the owners that stood on them, have been termed Haciendas. The Haciendas are identified with ruins of palaces.
The churches of Mexico also display rich variety of architectural styles that have attracted visitors from far and near.
