Mexico archeology is as rich as the culture and history of the country. Mexico has been the site where several civilizations and their distinctive cultures have flourished. Excavations through several years have unfolded in various parts a treasure of archaeological sites in Mexico. Besides the historical importance, archeology of Mexico also serves as a major tourist attraction. The traces of ancient civilizations that are left behind in the forms of ruins have played a significant role in enriching archeology in Mexico.
Mexico archeological sites can be classified under three regions. These include the ruins of the Maya civilization, found in the southern peninsula region, the cities of ancient origin in the Gulf coast area of the Aztec Empire that lies close to the present Capital of Mexico and the Zapotec and Mixtec sites in the southern part of the country.
Among the Mexico archeology sites, one of the best known and most visited is the remnants of the Maya civilization. Bonampak, Chichen Itza, Palenque, Tulum, Yaxchilan. Chinkultic, Coba, Tenam Puente and Uxmal offer insights into the Mayan culture and ruins. Bonampak is known for its frescoes that narrate the stories of the people, who inhabited the place, through drawings. Chichen Itza is an ancient sacred city that has been restored to a great extent. Palenque, located in the forest of Chiapas, is one of the best Mayan sites that certainly deserve a visit. The ruins found in Tulum town are positioned on the Caribbean coast and has a charm of its own. The other Mayan sites are equally fascinating, possessing their own distinctive features.
Mexico archeology sites that form a part of Axtec Empire includes Templo Mayor and Teotihuacan Gulf Cost consisting of the El Tajin site, while Zapotec and Mixtec include Mitla and Monte Alban.
