Mexican American War

Mexican American War resulted due to the disputes originating from America's plan to confiscate large areas from Mexico. America had plans of extending its territory to the Pacific Ocean. After the Louisiana territory was annexed by President Jefferson, the immigrants started settling in the lands which were not theirs.

The sentiments of the people living in their native lands were ignored and it was believed that the rules and ideas of the English speaking democratic America was a better option to run the government. The Native Americans and the Spanish speaking people were ignored and humiliated to some extent. America offered $5 million first and later $25 million to purchase California from Mexico. But Mexico refused to do so.

Both the countries used their traditional armies which comprised of cavalry artillery and infantry. Mexico used the guerrilla operations to drive the American forces but it was all in vain. Half of Mexico became a part of the United States territory. President Santa Anna was no more in power in Mexico.

The Mexican War of Independence

The urge of the Mexican to have an independent state and free itself from the bonds of the Spanish rule led to the Mexican War of independence. The war was started by the peasants who were not ready to remain under the colonial rulers. After Mexico was captured, Martin Cortes made a plan to revolt against the Spanish crown. Fuel was added to the revolt when Irishman William Lamport broke the bars and declared a proclamation for independence from the clutches of the Spain rule. Soon the war of independence gained importance and there were autonomists, royalists and independents.

But the result of the war was not very satisfactory as only a treaty was formed between the liberals and conservatives.

The Chicano Movement

Also known by the name of Chicano Civil Rights Movement, the Chicago movement was just awing attached to the Mexican American civil rights movement. The movement was directed towards the search for freedom and power for the people of Mexico.

Mexican American War turned out to be one of the turning points of the Mexican history.
