The beginning of Universidad de Guanajuato was in the Hospice of the Holy Trinity, that an educational center. After the hospice was permitted to function as a college by the Spanish Crown in 1796, it came to be called the College of Holy Trinity. In the year 1827, with the introduction of constitutional government, Calos Montes de Oca Mendez was put in charge of the college and assumed the name College of the Immaculate Conception. The college changed its name again in the year 1867 and came to be called National College of Guanajuato. The college took its final name, Universidad de Guanajuato in the year 1945. Universidad de Guanajuato is guided by a commitment to improve the cultural, social and educational milieu of the country. Universidad de Guanajuato houses excellent libraries. Recently, it has started a library system that is completely automated. Students can easily access study materials at these libraries. Besides, academics, the university also seeks to promote art, film, literature among the students. Universidad de Guanajuato also hosts an annual festival, Cervantino, where reputed musicians give performances.
