Cancun is a city located on the shoreline of Quintana Roo, the easternmost state of Mexico, on the Yucatan peninsula.
It is a rapidly developing city with a fast changing skyline.
The city is situated on the Yucatan Canal that splits Mexico from the island of Cuba in the Greater Antilles. On certain occasions, the Cancún area is named as the Mayan Riviera or the Mexican Caribbean. The city is a world famous tourist resort and balneario (seaside resort in Latin America). All the modern hotels are located in the city center.
Also nicknamed the Glistening City, the city is home to a population of 562,973 (2005). The city is famous for its Mayan archeological sites (Tulum and Coba) and theme parks - Xel-Ha, Xcaret Eco Park, and Xplor.
