Mexican Cinema

With the dawn of the twentieth century, the beginning chapters of Mexican cinema began to be written. Cinema in Mexico developed parallely along with the historical and social events that unfolded in Mexico, during the twentieth century. Aptly depicting social upheavals, cinema of Mexico, sometimes portrayed dictatorial situations sometimes focused on Mexican Revolution.
In the recent years, Mexican cinema has been internationally appreciated and has brought home huge revenues. The development of Mexican cinema is marked by several distinct eras.

During the era of silent movies in Mexico, a number of movies were produced. The Mexican businessmen, began shooting documentaries and showing them in theaters to the audiences belonging to the upper castes. This led to a flood of venues in Mexico, where movies were shown. The Mexican movies produced during the initial two decades, primarily belonged to the non fiction category. However, a good number of fiction films were also made. With the close of the military era of the Mexican Revolution, feature films began to be made again. The year 1917 saw the setting up of Axteca Films.

1930s unleashed a new chapter in the history of Mexican cinema. This period has been termed as the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. Introduction of audio and film studios with excellent equipments were the defining feature of this era of Mexican cinema. Under the patronage of President Lazaro Cardenas, the Mexican film industry reached new heights. He adopted measures such as tax exemption and availability of loans for promoting the domestic film industry. This period is characterized by the development of two categories of films. One type was produced to reap commercial profits, while the other type portrayed ideals of nationalism. The domestic film industry of Mexico registered tremendous growth during this period. Mexican Film

There are several popular Mexican film actors. Some of them are Diego Luna, Cantinflas, Salma Hayak, Jorge Negrete, Anthony Quinn, Dolores del Rio and Pedro Infante. Among the popular Mexican films that have been produced in the 2000s are De ida y vuelta, Peidras verdes, Rito Terminal, Corazones rotos, Atletico San, Zurdo, Desnudos, Tijuana Makes Me Happy, Pan's Labyrinth and El Violin.
